Together We is a major new public art commission created for Cambridge South Station by artist Mark Titchner [LINK].
The Station Installation
Installed in the ticket halls at both the east and west entrances, the hand-painted artwork reflects themes of movement, circulation, and connection drawing on both transport networks and the human circulatory system.
The Artwork’s Development
During his research, Titchner was inspired by the work of William Harvey (1578–1657), an alumnus of the University of Cambridge and the first physician to describe systemic circulation. Searching Harvey’s writings, Titchner collected instances of the word “together” including phrases such as “drawn together,” “mingled together,” “arise together,” “combine together,” and “unite together.” These became the foundation of a text-based artwork exploring collective action, shared experience, and connection.
A New Station
The new Cambridge South Station, situated between Trumpington, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, and Hobson’s Park, will serve around 2 million passengers per year. The site lies at the heart of one of Cambridge’s fastest-growing districts.
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC), directly adjoining the station, is set to become Europe’s largest concentration of biomedical expertise, incorporating major hospitals including Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the Rosie Maternity Hospital, and the Royal Papworth Hospital.
